Engraving has been used for thousands of years as a way to mark and decorate objects. Whereas in the past, images were scratched onto objects using whatever sharp object was at hand—even a sharp stone—today’s methods are more modern. We offer two different types of engraving: mechanical engraving and laser engraving.

Mechanical engraving

Mechanical engraving is a technique that dates back thousands of years. Technically speaking, mechanical engraving encompasses any process in which a design is etched into a surface using a cutting tool. While in the past, engraving required a steady hand and plenty of free time, today computer programs and specialized machines are also used for mechanical engraving. This allows for significantly more complex designs to be applied to materials—designs that would be difficult to achieve with freehand engraving—and the process is completed in a fraction of the time.

Engraving with symbols representing Tallinn, Tartu, Pärnu, or any other location in Estonia is a popular option. This allows even mass-produced items to carry a touch of a smaller region’s unique character. Mechanical engraving often produces a more traditional—and, in the opinion of some customers, more beautiful—result, which is why it continues to compete successfully with laser engraving.

The blade used removes the surface layer of the object, leaving a contrasting mark from the underlying layer on the material. The color of the mark depends entirely on the material. The material can be leather, plastic, metal (including precious metals such as gold wedding rings), glass, marble, cardboard, etc. The mark left by mechanical engraving is clearly visible to the eye and can also be felt with a finger. To achieve a deeper mark, the same spot can be engraved multiple times, making it very easy to achieve a raised effect. Engraving in Tallinn, performed by our professional staff, guarantees a perfect result, regardless of the complexity of the order.

Engraving is one sure way to achieve a permanent result. It does not wear away or peel off, and even years later, the design remains clearly legible, visible, and understandable. Whether to choose laser engraving or mechanical engraving depends largely on the customer’s taste and preferences, and to some extent on the material being used. The surface to be engraved can be quite large, and the design can span a full 360 degrees, offering true freedom in the design process.

Laser Engraving

Laser engraving is one of the newest types of engraving. The laser engraving we offer is high-quality and long-lasting; it does not wear away or fade, and the entire process is relatively quick. The design is applied to the surface of the object using a laser beam. The topmost layer is removed, leaving a contrasting mark visible to the eye. With laser engraving, even designs that are extremely detailed and require precision are no problem.

Depending on the material of the object, the laser beam’s mark may take on a shade different from the original color, and this must be taken into account during laser engraving. When engraving on leather, for example, the top layer of the leather is removed, and the underlying layer determines the color and contrast of the laser engraving. Wood engraving and the resulting appearance depend on the type of wood. As a rule, the engraving appears in various shades of brown. Engraving on aluminum, however, appears white, and engraving on stainless steel appears black or grayish-black. If a metal product is already painted, the top layer of paint is removed.

In general, it is possible to engrave a wide variety of materials: glass (including goblets, vases, and bottles), leather (including wallets, belts, and handbags), ceramics (including vases, tableware, and flower pots), metal (including house numbers, street signs, directional signs, name tags, and engraved key chains), and wood (including souvenirs, kitchen utensils, and jewelry boxes). However, materials that cannot be laser-engraved include precious metals and nickel-plated surfaces. However, when the material requires the gentlest possible approach to engraving, the laser is indispensable, as no part of the laser actually comes into contact with the surface of the object being engraved. The laser beam alone is responsible for the result.
